Melbourne Cup Carnival & Cruise Night - November 2013

Our cruise night on the 1st Tuesday in November happens to coincide with that other event on at the same time in Melbourne, the Melbourne Cup.

A few years ago, the lady members of LGC [aka The Pink Slips ] decided that we may as well have a social get together during the afternoon given we needed to be on deck to host the cruise night. The weather hasn’t been too favorable in recent years and the numbers attending our Cup Carnival although modest in number, have been big on fun. This year we had a great weather forecast for a change and the numbers cruising in reflected this. We kicked our Cup Calcutta off at 2pm with auctioneer Fletch in full flight. After 45 minutes Fletch had found a successful bidder for every horse with the total pool exceeded $1000. The Cup was run and won, the $1000 split between the lucky winners then it was time for the Pink Slips to host another ‘Fashions on the Field’. The ladies were again ‘frocked up’ and more prizes for best dressed were awarded.

Out in the Homemaker centre’s car park, chrome bumpers had been rolling in and the car park was filling fast. By the time 5pm came around we had 300+ cars in the car park and still they rolled in. By 7pm when we drew winners for our $100 Cruiser prize and 3 ACDelco car care packs we had had over 400 cars cruise into the Mornington Centre.

The formula’s pretty simple. Great weather = great cruising. Lots of great cars with lots of relaxed car enthusiasts enjoying a public holiday.

Next month we return with our biggest event on the calendar, Santa Cruz. Expanded live family entertainment, a visit from Santa, great prizes on offer in our charity raffle and hundreds of gleaming chrome bumper cars.

How many more sleeps?

Here’s some photos taken by our roving photographer Graeme Hutson.
