Melbourne Cup Carnival & Cruise Night - November 2014

Melbourne Cup Carnival

The Pink Slips decided to relocate this year’s Cup Carnival to Benito’s Restaurant in Mornington. I’m sure all 100+ people who attended would agree that this was a good move. A comfortable indoors reception room with real table cloths, a hot & cold buffet + desert, bar service all in accord with the glamorous outfits on parade. Rick Charles provided the musical entertainment and had the couples up dancing. After lunch it was time to judge Fashions on the Field, with the girls up first. If you check out Graeme Hutson’s photos you’ll see there were many nice outfits modeled by the ladies. It was the guys turn next and after choosing a winner it was the family’s turn, with again a number of families’s dressed to kill. Lots of prizes and lots of smiles. We finished off with prizes for the kids colouring contest. No losers at a Pink Slips event with all the kids going back to their table clutching a prize. Being Melbourne Cup the serious action was centred on the race [well it is about the betting really!] and we had cup sweeps to have a flutter for cash winnings as well as a raffle with some great prizes. The real money came out when we started up the Cup Calcutta. In past years, the winner’s prize pool was a little over $1000. This year, the total of all winning bids for horses was $1745. Col McQuinn’s table won bids on a number of starters and more importantly, owned the bids on the first 3 horses past the post in the Cup. Col collected the bulk of the prize pool with Cheryl making a few $’s on her ‘investment’ winning 4th place.

Rick Charles then entertained the crowd for the rest of the afternoon. A very enjoyable afternoon with lots of happy faces. Our thanks to everyone came along to this event especially those that ‘frocked up’ to help make it even more special. Special mention to all the kids who had not only dressed up but were very well behaved in what was a pretty adult affair. Well done all.

Our thanks to:

  • The crew at Benito's for providing the venue and excellent service
  • Roger Thomas Jewellers Mornington for a beautiful ladies ring, custom made especially for this event as a prize
  • Meguairs and ACDelco for prizes in the hamper raffle
  • Cheryl & the team from Pink Slips for organizing another enjoyable get together.

It was then time for some of the LGC crew to move around to the Homemaker Centre to prepare for the second event for the day, the monthly Cruise Night.

Cruise Night

At last some decent weather! And out they came, all 350+ street rods, chrome bumpers, muscle, sports & classic, you name a style and era of car and they were all represented at the November Cruise Night. Being Melbourne Cup public holiday also allowed car enthusiasts from further away to cruise down to Mornington. The Rotary BBQ sold out and the café was busy from start to finish. The Australian Street Rod Federation had their ’32 Ford Coupe street rod on display and was busy selling raffle tickets to win this cool rod as soon as they set up their table. The dress code was a little different with many people still dressed up in their race going outfits mixing with the regulars in rod run T shirts.

We had our 1000th LGC Cruiser take out a subscription so we recognized Gary from Mt Martha with a few extra goodies for this milestone. When we started this program up we hoped we might get a 100 car enthusiasts willing to support us with an annual subscription. Never thinking we’d ever be welcoming Cruiser #1000. Our thanks to everyone who has taken out a subscription. As we’ve said many times, it gives the LGC crew great motivation to continue hosting the events we do knowing we are so well supported.

A LGC Cruiser draw for a $100 note and finding three winners for the night’s gate raffle of ACDelco & Liqui Moly prize packs completed another enjoyable cruise night.

See you there next month back at the Homemaker Centre at our annual ‘biggie’, Santa Cruz. It’s likely that we may have the ‘House Full’ sign up for this event, so if you’re coming in your ‘daily driver car’ can you help us by parking away from the main car park where we host the cruise night.

Here’s some photos from Graeme Hutson.
