Melbourne Cup Carnival & Cruise Night - November 2015
With the 1st Tuesday in the month always falling on Melbourne Cup day in November, we kicked off the Cruise Night with a Cup Carnival at Benito’s Restaurant in Mornington, a reception room with real table cloths, an excellent meal for lunch and bar service all in accord with the glamorous outfits worn by the 80 people present.
If you check out Graeme’s photos you’ll see there were many nice outfits modeled by the ladies. Rick Charles provided the musical entertainment and had couples up dancing.
Being Melbourne Cup the serious action was centered on the Cup. We had 6 sweeps to give everyone a chance at having a runner in the Cup and a raffle with lots of prizes. The real money came out when we started up the Cup Calcutta. Local auctioneer, Ross Barron from E View in Mornington conducted the auction and after some competitive bidding, the total $ value of the Calcutta was $2275, up $500 from last year.
The Cup was run and won by a 100/1 outsider and there were plenty of smiles on winners faces. Ian picked up Prince of Penzance for only $40 and collected $1500 from the Calcutta. A pretty good return! Col & Damien, both big bidders during the auction had to be content with 2nd & 3rd places but covered their bets with $725 between them. The rest of us with runners in the Calcutta just had to content with having a great afternoon. Some punters did pick up some $’s out of the sweeps to compensate.
Rick Charles then entertained the crowd for the rest of the afternoon. A very enjoyable afternoon with lots of happy faces. Our thanks to everyone came along to this event especially those that ‘frocked up’ to help make it even more special. It was then time for some of the LGC crew to move around to the Homemaker Centre to prepare for the next phase of the day, the monthly Cruise Night.
After hosting our Cup Carnival at Benito’s, it was time to set up around the corner at the Homemaker Centre for our monthly Cruise Night.
At last, the good weather encouraged lots of car owners to cruise in their rides and we had over 250 cars roll into the Centres car park. The cafe was kept busy keeping everyone fed & refreshed while they caught up with friends or checked out the many great cars on show.
It was soon 7pm and time for the Cruiser and entrants raffle prize draws. Chevs performance in Carrum Downs provided a $300 voucher for a dyno tune which was soon in the hands of one lucky LGC Cruiser, as was the $100 cash in another. We then found winners for the 3 ACDelco & Meguiar’s product packs in the entrants draw.
