Mid Winter Cruise 2012
After announcing that we we’re cruisin to beach in the middle of winter for this year’s Mid Winter Cruise, little did we suspect we’d luck out with almost beach weather to go with it. After weeks of wet, cold, windy, well miserable really, weather we enjoyed a bright sunny and calm day. And like mushrooms after rain, the chrome bumpers appeared from everywhere. With over 200 cars being entered at the cruise start in Frankston [the car park rivalled most summer car shows] and with another 50 or more going directly to Sorrento, including many local car owners, we quickly filled the 200 reserved parking spaces we’d been able to put aside for the arrival of the cruise. Bright chrome bumper cars were soon rubbing shoulders with the silver and black German SUV’s in the main street. This was by far the biggest rollup we’ve yet had for a Mid Winter event.
The streets were soon filled with people seeking out the perfect lunch spot or in many cases the new outfit to wear!
In the good ‘ol days, Sunday drives included listening to the latest Top 40. Not any more so we’d provided entrants cruisin along the bay with an observation quiz to help occupy their time. Kids also had some great prizes up for grabs in the colouring contest while they were in Sorrento.
At 2pm it was presentation time.
We kicked off with the days LGC Cruiser draw. With well over 100 Cruisers already subscribing for another year the ticket box was well stocked. We had three crisp $100 notes to find new owners for. Lucky winners were Gary Stafford, Michael O’Conner and newly signed up on the day, Anthony Masci.
There were no 100% correct entries in the observation quiz but with only one missed answer, Peter & Heather Liston from the 5-6-7 Chev Club walked away with an overflowing hamper for winning with the best score.
All other entries with 10 or better correct answers went into the runners up draw and Rosanne Asling, David Murphy along with John & Rhonda each collected another overflowing hamper.
It then took about 20 minutes to distribute the stack of toys and games for the kid’s colouring contest. I don’t think it’ll be too difficult getting kids to come with their parents to any future LGC events after lots of kids went home with some great items.
During the day, a couple of our members judging the days best presented award managed to agree that Elvio Artico’s beautiful ’57 Chev 2 door sedan was a worthy winner. Elvio collected a bucket filled with car care products to keep his Mist Green cruiser looking good.
Congratulations to all the winners.
Our thanks to the Sorrento Chamber of Commerce for the welcome mat they put out for us to host this cruise. Also to Vince and the team at the Continental Hotel for acting as our host venue for the day.
Who say’s car enthusiasts won’t drive their cars in the middle of winter? It does help to have a working heater though!
Thanks for coming and making it another good day out.
